ABOUT

Emmalie Tello is a clarinetist and teaching artist committed to encouraging imaginative and conversational experiences within and around music. An ardent fan of contemporary music, she has performed with ensembles including International Contemporary Ensemble, Talea Ensemble, Wet Ink Ensemble, among others. Forthcoming recordings include Bob Becker’s “Clear Things May Not Be Seen” with ETHEL.

As a soloist, Emmalie was featured in Brian Ferneyhough’s "La Chute d'Icare" with the Mannes American Composers Ensemble, under David Fulmer. As a chamber musician, she has premiered music at Carnegie Hall, National Sawdust for the MATA festival, the Banff Centre, and the Bulgarian Consulate, among others. Personal highlights include premieres of music written for her by her dear friends and colleagues Lora Al-Ahmad and Jens Ibsen. She has also worked as a guest artist to perform young student composers’ pieces from Wildflower Composers, Luna Composition Lab, and the Walden School Music Camp.

Emmalie is co-founder and co-director of Art Beyond the Ink (ABI), an organization which uses interdisciplinary performance to engage young audiences and support early-career artists through musical storytelling and interdisciplinary collaboration, along with Rebecca Schifilliti. The award-winning business is a part of both in- and after-school programs across New York City and is an active partner to the New York Public Library. Along with educational programs and curriculum, Emmalie writes and produces short films for ABI and had work screened at The Backyard at Hudson Yards and The Dimenna Center. Emmalie is co-author of “Hearing and Seeing Musical Stories: The Story-Filled Tool For Understanding What You Hear,” a children’s workbook that teaches musical concepts through short stories, artistic prompts, and kinesthetic exercises.

Emmalie’s other teaching experience spans work at the Manhattan School of Music’s Community Partnerships program, the MUSES program for children in foster care and prevention services, and substitute teaching with the Youth Orchestra of St. Luke’s. She has been a guest teaching artist with the Sphinx Organization, the New York Public Library, the Gesellschaftshaus Magdeburg in Germany, and on the collegiate level with symphony members at Hunter College. Emmalie obtained degrees in Entrepreneurship and Clarinet from The New School College of Performing Arts (Bm ‘19/MA ‘20), where she studied with Jon Manasse, and in Contemporary Clarinet Performance from the Manhattan School of Music (MM ‘22), where she studied with David Krakauer.

An advocate for empowerment and self-expression in every aspect, Emmalie is also passionate about fitness and is a certified personal trainer by the American Council on Exercise.

As Producer

Original musical films written and produced with Art Beyond the Ink
Guided by the belief that music tells stories, each film’s plot is directly inspired by the music, thinking about questions like:

Does the music make us think of a color, an image, or a character?
How does the piece make us feel, and does it have an emotional arc?
If this piece were the background music in a movie scene, what would be happening?

These films primarily serve as visual tools in community workshops on creative listening and musical storytelling, but they have also been screened independently for audiences.
Watch our current films below:

PROJECTS

Art Beyond the Ink

Fueled by the belief that every piece of music tells a story, Art Beyond the Ink (ABI) is an arts education organization which supports students and early-career artists through musical storytelling and interdisciplinary collaboration. Co-founded in 2020 by Emmalie Tello and Rebecca Schifilliti, ABI is a part of in- and after-school programs across New York City and is an active partner to the New York Public Library. In summer of 2020, ABI released its first musical storytelling workbook, Hearing and Seeing Musical Stories: The Story-Filled Tool for Understanding What You Hear, which teaches children musical concepts through short stories and interactive exercises to enhance self-expression, emotional learning, and development of a personal narrative. Along with educational programs and curriculum, ABI produces short films that have been screened at The Backyard at Hudson Yards. In 2021, they launched the first season of EXPO: New Works Competition, which awarded each winning composer the opportunity to have their music used in a short film.

Teaching

“In over 60 years of playing the clarinet, Emmalie has been my best teacher. While always keeping focus on where the musical line wants to travel, Emmalie at the same time keeps track of the fundamentals: breathing, embouchure, finger placement, tongue location, etc. Emmalie is wonderfully communicative and always cheerful and energetic.”

- Jeffrey Stark, student since 2019

Every piece of music tells a story.

Emmalie believes that music is a valuable tool for self expression and personal development. It empowers students to think creatively and optimistically, and it also provides a platform to learn widely-applicable skills. She aims to help her students feel understood, heard, and confident through the power of their craft.

When teaching, Emmalie emphasizes the following concepts:

  • Creative Problem Solving: How do we practice efficiently? Explore a number of ways to approach difficult passages and discover what works best for the individual. These tools can be kept “in your back pocket,” and this way of thinking can be applied to many other kinds of problem solving.

  • Storytelling Through Music: Emmalie believes that every piece of music can create imagery and narratives. Tapping into imagination not only enhances performance for the listener, but it also makes the experience more fun for the student!

  • Craft Development: By covering all the technical components of learning the clarinet, including tone, rhythm, articulation, intonation, and scales/fundamental practice, students will discover new ways to understand the clarinet from the inside-out. Students can also expect to discuss how to read music, understand music notation, and sight-read.

Emmalie is available to teach both in-person and online lessons, and she offers a few ways to do so. She has experience teaching beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. She will work with students to achieve their personal goals - so dream big and let’s reach for the sky!

Emmalie’s 8+ years previous teaching experience spans work with students at Hunter College, Youth Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Mannes Prep Division, Manhattan School of Music community outreach programs, Music for Extraordinary Students (MUSES), and the New York Public Library, among others. She is the co-founder of the educational organization, Art Beyond the Ink, and is co-author of the children’s musical storytelling workbook, Seeing and Hearing Musical Stories: The Story-Filled Tool For Understanding What You Hear.

Testimonials

“I really loved working with Emmalie! She always gives great feedback and constructive criticism. One thing she does which I LOVE is using metaphors and analogies in her teaching. For example one thing I had trouble with was remembering the different values of flats, sharps, and naturals. However, one comparison which helped me a lot to come over this was a pencil analogy. It was this: ‘Think of them as a pencil: A sharp is like a sharp pencil. A natural is a normal pencil. A flat is like a flat pencil.’ This helped a lot and I find now when reading music I always think of this along with other analogies. This is just one of the many techniques which Emmalie uses when she teaches! I really loved being her student and I shall definitely remember her teaching highly.”

Studio Guidelines

All students/families will be expected to sign an agreement to the studio guidelines upon first lesson.

What To Expect: A typical lesson will begin with a short warm-up. I encourage my students to come with their own goals, and I am happy to structure lessons based upon achieving them! If those goals are not yet clear, we can develop some together. My students study technical and tonal exercises along with repertoire. I will guide each student in choosing pieces that are at their level and will motivate them to head to the practice room. We can explore solos (and duets if in-person), and we can also study chamber music if the student chooses. If the student is preparing music for school, an audition, or an event, they can choose to use their lesson as extra help for that, or they can explore other repertoire. I also have ample experience assisting students who have competitive goals.

Sometimes, my students further personalize their lesson structure. In-depth ear training and playing by ear are great topics to include depending on student goals; several of my students enjoy learning how to transcribe and play along with their favorite songs! If seeking online lessons, please feel free to ask me any questions concerning equipment and online lesson setup, as I am happy to advise on what is most efficient! However, this can be an investment, so nothing fancy is needed to begin lessons (see “Materials”).

Materials: Students must be sure to bring their own clarinet, complete with mouthpiece and reeds, to every lesson. For online lessons, a student should aim to have a device with a stable internet connection; lessons generally take place over Zoom. Music can be provided by the student or teacher; all materials requested by me will be kept free or cost-effective. All students will be given a personal Google folder which will be updated regularly with lesson notes, what to practice, and any music discussed during lessons; they should be prepared to check this weekly.

Payment: Payment for lesson packages is required before the start time of the lesson, unless otherwise agreed upon independently. If lesson payment becomes more than five (8) days overdue, the student will be charged a 5% late fee, and lessons will be paused until the owed payment is made. I accept payment via cheque, Zelle/Chase QuickPay, Paypal, Venmo, and cash.

Late Arrivals and Cancellations: I cannot guarantee an extension of a lesson if the student arrives late for any reason. If I arrive late, I will owe the student the time I missed, and it will be added to future lessons. Lessons must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance in order to reschedule with no penalty; if less than 24 hours notice is given, the student must still pay for the cancelled lesson in full (this includes the case of a student forgetting their instrument on the lesson day). If a student cancels the lesson with prior notice, the lesson can be rescheduled for a time agreed upon by both of us. If I cancel with less than 24 hours of advance notice, I will owe you a free lesson. Exceptions for both student and teacher will be made for situations beyond one's control, such as an emergency or sudden illness, on a case-by-case basis.

Book your first lesson today!

Not sure how long to book for?

Lesson times can vary depending on age, goals, and time commitment (ie. how much time you have to practice outside of the lesson!) Here are a few of my recommendations for players of all ages and levels! Feel free to reach out with any questions - I am happy to discuss appropriate length in more detail based on personal circumstance.
